Why Tile & Stone?

Tile and stone are excellent choices.  Ceramic, porcelain, and stone are used for floors, walls, and even ceilings.  Ceramic and porcelain usually have a printed surface to look like stone.  They are similar except the porcelain is baked at higher temperatures so it's much harder and more durable.  Porcelain also usually has more detail in the printing and texture and therefore it's more expensive to manufacture.  Ceramic and porcelain have industry ratings that detail their recommended usage.  So harder tile is made for commercial flooring and less slippery tile is made for showers.  These tiles can be cold, hard, and tough on people's joints.  Stone is a beautiful ,natural product.  Nature makes random patterns that can vary from small samples and that's part of the beauty of a real, natural product.  Some stone is quite soft and that lack of hardness must be respected so you don't chip or scratch the stone.  Real stone requires more upkeep and you must seal it to prevent staining.  Even with sealing, there are salts and minerals that will leach from the rocks and discolor adjacent surfaces.  And with harsh enough chemicals you can damage real stone.  Each type of tile has its benefits and its drawbacks.  Grouts have changed a lot in recent years.  The less expensive cement-based grouts are still a good option if used with stone tile that requires a sealer.  With porcelain tile urethane grouts are more popular because they are permanently sealed and require much less maintenance.
